Vega Igniters

VEGA is the newest European launcher with its first launch on February 13th, 2012. The VEGA launcher is a single body launcher with three solid propellant stages and an additional liquid propulsion module for attitude and orbit control, and satellite release. Pyrogen igniters will ignite the three stages.

Avio is the manufacturer of the tree solid rocket motors of VEGA. Aerospace Propulsion Products is provides Avio with the igniters for all three stages.

The three igniters of the VEGA solid rocket motors (P80, Z23 and Z9) share a similar design based on a main igniter containing HTPB/AP based propellant and a pyrotechnic igniter with BKNO3. A part of the inner structure of this pyrotechnic igniter is produced by additive manufacturing. The casings of the igniters are made of a “consumable” composite structure, that  is partially consumed during motor functioning. Herakles (France) produces these igniter casings.
